To get registered as an ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) you need to pass three exams. The first is a test of your knowledge - a theory test. The driving instructors theory test is much tougher than the regular theory test for learner drivers. When you have passed that test you will need to pss a test of your own driving ability. This test is again much harder than the regular learner test. It lasts longer, involves ore manoeuvres and you are allowed to make fewer mistakes. When you have completed the first two tests you have to pass a test of your own ability to instruct. At present this involves two half hour sections where you have to instruct an examiner who is playing the role of a learner driver.
The three driving instructor tests are quite tough and only about 105 of all those who set out on taking part one actually get through all three parts. It is important that you get the best possible driving instructor training to give you the best chance of passing. Each test may only be attempted 3 times, otherwise you have two wait for two years and start again at the beginning.
